Troisport Pool Tri @ Wahoo (17 August 2008)

The first Troisport Pool Tri was held last Sunday with much excitement for this new concept in South Africa. There were a number of challenges that faced the organization which included what weather bureau threw at us and the no show of the Johannesburg metropolitan police department (despite having a confirmation letter for the services!). The event was a great success and the organizers expectations on entry numbers were surpassed especially given the windy and chilly conditions that prevailed. The course is compact and super spectator friendly. It was also great way to introduce people to the supeb facilities that the Wahoo aquatics centre and gym offers, Lots of "oooh" and "aahs" going around. The day was fun filled and a brilliant introduction for newbies into the sport of triathlon. A pool swim being a lot less intimidating than a dam or the sea with manageable distances. We had all walks of life participate, There were men with very bushy leg hair, women of ALL ages and lots of kids. The swim was done and dusted in the broad ten laned 25mX25m pool with the top girls coming out in front (Lucie Zelenkova and Corinne Berg) The cycle took place on the closed 3.3km cycle course that took cyclists out and back on Maxwell drive and with some good technical sections and short hills to contend with. The men pulled back the gap and started to put pressure on the field. The run was contested around the sport fields and internal roads of St Peter's College on a spectator friendly 1,25km lap.

A short prize giving was held and some generous prizes handed out for the results below:

The 400/20/5 format was won by: Michael Davidson, followed by Bright Mamogale, then Rudolf Naude

The girls race was won by Corinne Berg, followed by Lucie Zelenkova and Carla Germishuys

The 200/10/2.5 format was won by Frank Kienhofer; with Mnandi Weber second, Kelly van der Toon Third, Ian Smith fourth. (The girls stood their ground here! - no need to split things up..)

We also had a 100.6.6/1.25 format for smaller children

We want to thank Central Gauteng Triathlon and Wahoo Aquatics Centre for their assistance to make this event possible. Troi Sport would also like to thank the sponsors of infrastructure and prizes that being Nestle pure life waters and Bar-One, Zoot Sports and Aquasphere goggles (Dave Harrington)
